This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointeeto join our team conducting research related to coupled physics in complex, multiphase fluid flow. You should have a strong background in solving coupled multi-physics problems especially multiphase fluid dynamics, and transport. Knowledge in the areas of electromagnetics, thermal and species transport, or complex rheology would be beneficial. Under the guidance of members of the technical staff, you will develop advanced computational models for numerical simulation of coupled problems involving free surface flows and complex rheology.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Develop, implement and improve numerical computational models for simulating coupled physics problems. These may include Maxwell’s equations coupled to thermal transport for passive cooling films or involve fluid mechanics, energy transport, and chemical reaction processes for foam filling.
- Develop and apply models to characterize extrusion flows of particle-filled polymers for direct ink write applications. Work on implementation of Elastoviscoplastic models with novel algorithms.
- Conduct research to validate models, present, and publish results.
- Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Math, or related field
- Experience with computational modeling of fluids and using the Linux operating system
- Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications and presentation or work at appropriate scientific conferences
- Ability to obtain and hold a DOE L security clearance
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex engineering problems including microscale physics
- Clear, effective communication skills -- oral and written
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in large, multi-disciplinary teams.
- Familiarity with standard programming languages including C, C++, and numerical analysis packages, such as Matlab
- Experience using and/or writing scientific finite element codes
- Experience in modeling multiphase transport, materials science, and chemical processes, particularly in the area of chemical reactions and thermodynamics
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and present briefings to technical peers as well as program and line management (internal and external)
- Ability to work towards a constantly changing target, with intermittent sprints and hard deadlines
- Travel 2-4 times per year to participate in program meetings
The Fluid and Reactive Processes department is responsible for conducting research on coupled transport phenomena (mass, momentum, energy, etc.) for processes that span multiple length and time scales (nano ->meso ->macroscale) in support of internal and external customers. This research is applied tothe flow of and within disordered, multiphase or heterogeneous materials (e..g.,complex and reacting fluids, powders and particulate materials, and energetic materials) for assessing production, safety and performance of weapon components. This research is used to develop validated numerical predictive tools that we apply to DOE, DOD, and industrial customer problems. Our work spans fundamental research and development to engineering analysis of applied problems. Our basic research activities focus on developing the scientific insights and physical models that will enhance our predictive simulation capabilities. Application projects range from small modeling efforts requiring rapid and agile turnaround to high consequence applications with an emphasis on credibility of model results by exercising and advancing sound V&V/UQ practices. We work closely with experimentalists and code developers to improve the fidelity of supporting tests and to ensure needed code functionality is available.
