If so, you could be the Mechanical Engineer we are seeking for the Infrastructure Engineering Department 04852 to work within a multi-disciplined engineering department that supports the daily operations of utility infrastructure systems!
This role is focused on our natural gas distribution system, and coordinates activities with other engineers, maintenance teams, and facilities operations teams. You will lead the development of our asset management strategy, and operations of the system. This role also provides engineering support to projects and reviews designs for conformance to engineering standards and codes.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Lead the activities associated with natural gas system as a member of the Infrastructure Engineering Team.
Be the subject matter expert (SME) providing strategic direction for life cycle asset management of the system, including the recapitalization, operations and maintenance (O&M), and processes for our Natural Gas system.
Reviewing project designs, developing outage plans (sequence of operations for natural gas outages), and resolving any operations issues.
Develop and track metrics, responding to questions from our maintenance organization and support our project development and planning organizations.
Develop asset management strategies and maintain a comprehensive lifecycle asset management plan for the assigned system.
Work within the team environment to develop and implement condition assessment strategies that use existing processes and resources where feasible.
Develop new processes, creative solutions and improve operations and maintenance practices.
Coordinate with maintenance team leaders to develop a maintenance program for the system to include, where necessary, recommend training for maintenance personnel.
Identify and resolve preventative and corrective maintenance issues to ensure operational and safety requirements for the system are met.
Specific tasks include:
Maintain the Life Cycle Asset Management Plan for the system, identify long-term natural gas system needs using asset management principles.
Support energy management and resource conservation efforts and assist in integrating efforts across the site.
Maintain site wide computer model(s) for the natural gas system.
Participate on our Design Standards Committee and manage system design standards and specifications through partnership with customers to drive efficiencies, system reliability, and improve life cycle costs.
Participate in developing and updating procedures and processes with a focus on improving operations interfacing with the process coordinators.
Provide recommendations on Site Modification Requests and follow through on those recommendations.
Provide support to our Planning Organization in locating future building sites and understand and support the direction of the Long-Range Development Plan (LRDP).
Provide guidance and support as needed to ensure that safety and environmental compliance issues are being addressed and followed for the system.
Provide guidance into the project execution process to include; review of project charters, development of project requirements, participation in project designs, and reviews of A/E designs as requested. Communicate and work with the project customers to provide solutions to issues in a timely and comprehensive manner.
Oversee compliance reporting requirements.
Serve as SME for assigned specialty systems or focus areas with our organization.
Review and validate monthly natural gas metering data. Provide metering reports as required. Consults with SNL management on energy use, contracts, and issues.
This position is eligible for part-time telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.
Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution plus five (5) years’ experience working in the field of mechanical engineering or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE L-level security clearance.
Master of Science in an engineering field from an ABET accredited institution.
Professional Engineers' License (P.E.). or the ability to obtain.
Experience with DOE Orders pertaining to facility design, maintenance, and construction.
Demonstrated experience with the following:
Working in a Facilities organization.
Natural Gas System Analysis, ability to learn Synergi Gas modeling software.
Knowledge of gas system operations and maintenance requirements.
Developing and implementing a preventative maintenance plan.
Analyze system drawings, and construction plans.
Ability to follow process and desire to ensure that processes deliver the results in a safe and secure manner.
Ability to frame improvement discussions in terms of the customer
The Infrastructure Engineering Department (4852) provides a comprehensive perspective of Operations and Engineering support for Sandia/NM site infrastructure systems and primary utility systems. We provide support to our mission partners related to site activities, determination of new project needs, asset management, and engineering solutions. Our department supports excavation and penetration activities as well as Facilities Graphic Information System (FGIS) support for Sandia/NM Facilities and Infrastructure systems.
