Job summary:

This position is a staff member in the Department. Your primary role will be leading continuous improvement efforts across the lab utilizing lean thinking, lean six sigma techniques, design thinking, lean product development and other problem-solving methods. In addition, you will be engaged in the development and deployment of the Laboratory Operating System [LOS] across Sandia. Day to day work will include developing materials and content for successful LOS deployment, partnering with groups across SNL to identify improvements to operational efficiency and effectiveness, and then leading activity to realize those improvements as demonstrated by measurable results.

Primary Job Duties:

You will be required to identify areas that could be made more operationally efficient across Sandia. Once identified, you will lead and/or be actively involved in improving the work. Key activities will include:

  • Applies technical, engineering, or science expertise to define, understand, and resolve complex problems
  • Selecting methods and techniques to improve the work, using lean, lean six sigma and learning organization methods and principles.
  • Defining the problem, ideal state, target state and experiments/actions to close gaps.
  • Building strong agreement with the team involved in the improvement process on both the what and how to improve.
  • Identifying and resolving risks and hurdles that prevent closure to an improved process.
  • Demonstrating technical knowledge and understanding of the issues so that you can actively facilitate resolution.

Success in this role will be measured on the tangible results achieved to improve the operational effectiveness and efficiency of SNL. The activity to achieve those results (events, direct observation, experiments, etc.) are an important means to that end. The successful employee will be able to distinguish activity vs results and ensure that there is constant drive for results. Results in this role include leading or being a key member of a team to make a product or service better and more efficient for the customer. Consequently, the staff member that can effectively implement a wide set of methods and processes that enable tangible results will thrive in this role.

Additional duties will include:

  • Participating actively in the Scrum process including creating user stories and reporting daily on progress.The Business excellence team uses Scrum for all work activity.
  • Creating content and then delivering the content (papers, bright spots, training, educational and such) as required to support the development and deployment of LOS.It is expected that content will need frequent iteration to meet the needs of Sandia as this is new to the organization.lev-4xeB

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities we will be looking for:

  • Applies technical judgment in determining optimal application of engineering and technical practices to ensure the delivery of high quality product.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of lean thinking including the use of an A3 for problem resolution and project planning that lead to measurable results for the organization.
  • Strong writing, communication, facilitation and organizational skills to both a technical and non-technical community.
  • Proficiency in facilitating work of multiple people and groups to build strong agreement on the problem statement and actions to resolve.
  • Demonstrated teaming skills including the ability to work effectively with other organizations, functions, customers and suppliers.
  • Strong evidence of structured processes to complete your work and work with others, including keeping stakeholders apprised of progress.
  • Proficiency in systems thinking including identify and understanding the inter-relationships between people, processes and behavior.
  • Proven application of engineering methods, tools and techniques to design, maintain and improve product and processes across multiple groups.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline, or equivalent:• higher degree (MS, PhD) in relevant discipline; or• experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the jo
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level clearance.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of lean six sigma, design thinking, lean and lean product development techniques.
  • Knowledge of learning organizational concepts (mental models, systems thinking, shared vision, team learning, personal mastery).

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.
