In this role, you will be involved in the research and development of radiation effects testing, fabrication of advanced technological systems and novel ion beam analysis techniques. The ion accelerators range in energy from kV focused ion beam implantation systems to MV accelerators. You will operate a wide range of ions, from protons to gold at energies from eV to MeV in support of Sandia National Laboratories missions.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Maintain, operate, and upgrade ion accelerators

  • Maintain and optimize high vacuum system and high voltage systems

  • Uphold and maintain a safety focused work culture

  • Interact with internal and external collaborators to publish in high impact journals

Qualifications We Require:

  • Experience with maintenance of general electronics, high voltage and/or vacuum systems

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field

  • Prior experience with particle accelerators, ion sources and programmable logic controllers

  • Prior experience with programming languages such as LabView and Visual C or experience with software-hardware integration

  • Excellent interpersonal and team working skills

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Positive attitude and a passion for problem solving

About Our Team:

The Ion Beam Laboratory (IBL) houses six major accelerators: a 6 MV Tandem, a 3 MV Pelletron, a 400 kV implanter, a 30 kV Helium Ion Microscope and both a 35kV and 100 kV mass velocity filtered focused ion beam systems with <10nm spot size on target. Other experimental facilities include micro beam lines on all the major accelerators and an in-situ SEM and a TEM equipped with gas, fluid, and nanomechanical stages, with in-situ ion irradiation available from both the Tandem and a Colutron source.

The IBL engages in three major research thrusts:

  • Understanding the performance of materials in radiation environments. These projects impact the performance of microelectronics in space and other hostile environments, as well as cladding materials in nuclear reactor and storage environments

  • Developing and applying novel ion beam techniques to precisely measure materials compositions. Applications in this area include mapping hydrogen isotopes in fusion wall material and measuring the composition of thin complex materials such as transition metal oxides

  • Exploring the materials science of defects in solids. This broad area includes single ion implants for quantum applications, anomalous grain growth in nanograined materials, hydride formation under irradiation, and nanomechanical responses of materials

In each thrust the department provides unrivaled capabilities to multidisciplinary teams with an interest in publishing high quality research and applying the results to problems of national interest.

Our team is committed to nurturing a culture compatible with a broad group of people and perspectives in accordance with the changing makeup of the workforce.
