What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated RF engineering intern to participate in the research, development, troubleshooting, field testing, production, and delivery of advanced RF/microwave systems. The systems we build are used in high-impact and high consequence national security applications.

This position’s primary focus will be to support the development of RF systems based on advanced signaling techniques and low-power RF receiver/transmitter designs. Under the direction of engineering project leads, the successful candidate will be responsible for electrical assembly, functional testing, environmental testing, and troubleshooting of custom electronics circuits; field testing of electronics including test planning, coordination, and execution; coordination with production partners including test specifications, processes, and troubleshooting of non-conforming product; parts procurement, evaluation, and organization; laboratory space ownership; cable and circuit board specification and fabrication. Project meetings, production efforts, and field test assignments will include occasional short duration travel.

Our systems are based on advanced signaling techniques and ultra-low power RF receiver/transmitter designs. Successful candidates will become part of a multi-discipline, success oriented, high-performance, project team delivering systems that impact our National Security. Projects range from very fast paced, quick reaction requests in response to real-world driven needs to longer term, life-critical efforts with rigorous development requirements.

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program

  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with RF test equipment, which could include spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, power meters, sources, etc.

  • Experience with general electronic test equipment, which could include oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multi-meters, power supplies, etc.

  • Experience with surface-mount soldering

  • Experience building custom cables and test assemblies

  • Relevant experience and course work and interest in wireless communication systems

  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and document field and laboratory testing

  • LabView programming experience

  • Experience with mechanical assembly of flight hardware, epoxy staking, and potting processes

  • Currently holds a DOD Secret Clearance

The Radar & Signal Analysis department provides system analysis and design for a wide variety of radio frequency (RF) and microwave communications, geolocation, and radar missions with an emphasis on electromagnetic protection. The department missions include terrestrial, airborne, and space systems. Expertise within the department includes radar (fuzing, moving target interdiction, and synthetic aperture radar), digital communications, waveform development, waveform detection, signal processing, and transceiver development. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
