Sandia National Laboratories Intern - Security, Arms Control, and Force Protection Engineering (iSAFE) Institute R&D Graduate Summer in Albuquerque, New Mexico


We are seeking a Summer Intern - R&D Graduate to join our dynamic team for Summer 2021!

The Interns for Security, Arms Control, and Force Protection Engineering (iSAFE) Institute is one of the premier Intern Institutes at Sandia National Laboratories. We are seeking outstanding graduate students majoring in Chemical Engineering, Cognitive Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Explosives Engineering, Geophysics, Materials Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, Seismology, Statistics, Nuclear Engineering, Systems Engineering, a concentration in Human Factors or related fields of study. Our Interns will work on high-caliber, multi-discipline, cohesive teams to support programs and projects related to United States National Security. These projects include but are not limited to, critical asset protection and security, nuclear weapons and force protection, and weapons of mass destruction nonproliferation and cooperative threat reduction, energy and homeland security, intelligence science, and reliability engineering.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work with your team in designing, developing, implementing, testing, and delivering advanced data processing and exploitation software
  • Work with your team in designing, developing, and conducting tests and experiments related to our NS missions
  • Work in a collaborative and learning environment and assume significant responsibilities for assisting in the development of first-of-a-kind software solutions and data exploitation methods to solve challenging technical problems for national security needs
  • Utilize your knowledge, skills, and abilities to deliver quick and accurate solutions to complex and nationally significant problems
  • Develop new skills that focus on addressing needed capabilities for our projects
  • Contribute to data analysis and review in support of our NS mission projects
  • Contribute to reports and papers on technical topics
  • Help to identify and implement new tools and approaches to solving complex technical problems
  • Work with other Sandia National Laboratories Intern Institutes on shared projects.
  • Develop product or human/system interface designs that improve usability, enhance performance, and prevent errors
  • Contribute to multi-scale understanding of human decision making in high-consequence scenarios


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

  • GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 for all degrees earned preferred.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of an engineering or science-related field as listed in the required section
  • An existing U.S. Government granted security clearance
  • Self-motivated, hard-working, detail-oriented and thorough
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Experience with the following: Electro-mechanical systems; Control systems; Software programming; MATLAB; LabVIEW; National Instruments Veristand; Test instrumentation and troubleshooting
  • Experience with the following: Test designing, planning, execution and documentation; Data analysis and statistical methods; Digital signal processing; Mechanical structural analysis; Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis
  • Experience with modeling; SolidWorks, Pro/E, Creo, Finite Element Analysis
  • Knowledge in programming and scripting languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, SQL
  • Knowledge of tools and approaches related to human systems analysis or experimentation.

Department Description:

The Interns for Security, Arms control, and Force protection Engineering (iSAFE) Institute provides the opportunity to develop next-generation systems for compelling national security missions. Our interns work on complex and challenging problems to lower the risk posed by high-consequence events, such as nuclear and biological proliferation, terrorist threats, catastrophic incidents, and potentially destabilizing world and national events. Our projects range from small R&D and data analysis efforts to large, multidisciplinary team collaborations on complex multidimensional national security deliverables. Sponsored by Sandia’s Global Security Division, iSAFE offers our interns the opportunity to work with highly competent technical mentors and staff members which enhances the intern's experience at Sandia, while contributing to challenging national security mission problems. The mission of iSAFE is to identify and attract highly skilled interns to Sandia National Laboratories and provide contributions to national security through the effective use of science, technology and full-spectrum system solutions to lower the risk posed by high-consequence events. iSAFE’s objective is to create a pipeline of highly skilled and competent STEM interns for possible future employment at Sandia.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
