Sandia National Laboratories Intern - Science of Extreme Environments Research Initiative (SEERI) Pulsed Power - R&D Undergraduate Summer in Albuquerque, New Mexico

We are seeking Undergraduate Interns to join our dynamic team! Science and engineering students interested in learning and contributing to cutting edge research in the areas of pulsed power sciences, radiation effects, electromagnetics, and high energy density sciences are encouraged to apply for this Summer 2022 Internship. As an intern you will join the cohort that will be part ofthe Science of Extreme Environments Research Initiative (SEERI) and some of you will be affiliated with the Assured Survivability and Agility with Pulsed Power (ASAP) Mission Campaign.

Our program is highly interdisciplinary and designed for students pursuing degrees in the following majors, in alphabetical order:

  • Computer Science

  • Electrical Engineering

  • Materials Science

  • Mathematics

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Nuclear Engineering

  • Physics

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Experiments and modeling of pulsed power components and systems. Pulsed power compresses energy in both time and space and can generate short electrical pulses with more power than the world’s total electrical power capability. Topics include high voltage, high current capacitors and switches and high voltage insulators and breakdown.

  • Investigations into radiation generation using pulsed power or nuclear reactors and in experimental and modeling studies on radiation effects on components and systems.

  • Experiments and modeling of electromagnetic pulses and their effects on cables and electronic systems.

  • High energy density science including experiments and modeling of material properties under extreme temperatures and pressures including inertial confinement fusion that can be achieved using pulsed power systems.

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program

  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  • U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position.

Desired:

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0

  • Experience with one or more of the following

  • Pulsed power science and technology

  • Radiation, electrical and/or high energy density science

  • Modeling and simulation

  • Engineering fundamentals and engineering analysis and design

  • Computer skills including Microsoft office, data analysis, reporting, and programming

  • Experience documenting and presenting work in reports, memos, and presentations

  • An existing U.S. Government granted security clearance.

The Assured Survivability and Agility with Pulsed Power (ASAP) Mission Campaign will rapidly develop next-generation pulsed-power capabilities to sustain and extend the nation’s technological and intellectual leadership in hostile survivability of electronics and complex systems, nuclear weapon science, and broader national security issue. As part of the SEERI Program, students are offered hands-on flexible, challenging, interesting, and cutting-edge research opportunities while being mentored by Sandia National Laboratories scientists and engineers. These hands-on experiences are supplemented with technical seminars and facility tours that expose students to the broad range of engineering and scientific disciplines represented at Sandia. Student Interns are provided the opportunity and encouraged to present their work and accomplishments to their peers and the Sandia scientific community every August. In some cases, students are asked to present their work at professional conferences.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
