What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Year Round - R&D Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team! Perform entry-level work within a technical science and engineering environment working in conjunction with Sandia staff on interdisciplinary projects that involve applying integrated technical judgment—which requires using critical thinking skills and the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses about the uses and deployment of advanced technologies in support of US nonproliferation and nuclear security goals.

On any given day, the student intern will need to:

  • Use advanced research methods,

  • Perform critical thinking activities, and

  • Synthesize and analyze complex source material.

  • Other project tasks will be dependent on successful candidate qualifications and experience. Specific projects may include international nuclear safeguards projects with robotics, nuclear safety and security, and cyber security best practices in international settings.

    Due to the nature of the projects, the successful candidate will need to be on-site.

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program

  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Previous experience with robotics development and experimental use

  • Understanding of the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency, particularly the safeguards and security divisions

  • Interest in global affairs, preferably with a specific focus on nonproliferation and verification issues

  • Familiar with technologies used in support of international treaties and agreements

  • Understanding of cybersecurity frameworks and NIST standards; familiarity with programming languages would be ideal.

  • Capability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
