Intern - Nuclear Material Detection - Technical Undergraduate Summer

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an agile, humble, accountable and team-oriented Technical Undergraduate Summer Intern to join our dynamic team! We provide an outstanding opportunity to students with an interest in supporting U.S. national security in a nuclear material related role.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Work within a team of engineers to perform safeguards and security Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) measurements utilizing radiation detector equipment.

• Learn about specialized gamma spectroscopy equipment for measurements of nuclear material.

• Take the lead on a summer project of lasting impact to our national laboratory's security program while growing your technical skills.

• Be part of a high performing team working to deter and detect theft and diversion of accountable nuclear material.

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

• Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited related undergraduate program

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

• Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

• U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

• Experience operating with lab equipment, testing environment, and radiation environments.

• Security background and experience.

• Experience working in a team environment.

About Our Team:

To support the mission, multiple Sandia organizations acquire, use, and possess accountable nuclear materials. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) requires all sites that possess accountable nuclear materials to establish and maintain nuclear material management (NMM) and Material Control & Accountability (MC&A) programs. Nuclear Material Management programs are designed to ensure that nuclear materials are managed as valuable assets, used appropriately, and disposed of properly when no longer needed. MC&A programs are designed to deter and detect theft and diversion of nuclear material by both outside and inside adversaries. The Nuclear Material Management/MC&A Department develops and implements effective NMM and MC&A programs that are compliant with DOE/NNSA requirements, while supporting line organizations mission objectives.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
