What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a Year-Round Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team. In this position you will learn and conduct experimental electrochemical materials science for energy storage R&D alongside accomplished scientists while using industry-leading equipment and facilities and gaining compelling experiences in preparation for a career in this exciting area.
On any given day, you may be called on to assist or conduct lab activities including:
Preparing electrolyte solutions and performing electrochemical experiments
Building and cycling lithium-ion or similar batteries
Characterizing and analyzing nanoscale electrochemical materials using microscopy and spectroscopy
Preparing and analyzing data plots
Developing scientific communication skills by contributing to presentations and papers
Posting Duration:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Qualifications We Require:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
U.S. citizens
Qualifications We Desire:
Strong oral and written communication skills
Computer skills relevant for data analysis and presentation (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations
Major in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science
Hands-on chemical laboratory experience
Experience with glove box operations and/or battery materials
Experience with materials spectroscopy, microscopy, or electrochemistry
Advanced computer skills (such as Python, Matlab, COMSOL, etc.)

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative research to advance the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enable the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus on the discovery, understanding, and exploitation of properties and structures unique to the micro- and nanoscale, broadly directed along three thrusts:
Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (e.g. energy storage, corrosion, chemical sensing, plating)
Electronic Materials Science for National Security Applications (e.g. nanostructured carbons for chemical sensing, energy storage, high conductivity wires/cables, thermal solutions, etc.; granular-metals for high-speed switching devices, protection of the Electric Grid, etc.; novel superconductors, etc.)
Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (e.g. metal-organic frameworks for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, catalysis)
