Sandia National Laboratories Intern - International Safeguards and Engagements - R&D Graduate Year-Round in Albuquerque, New Mexico

We are seeking a Year-Round R&D Graduate Intern to join our dynamic team!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Apply analysis of international affairs, principles of foreign relations, and scientific and engineering principles in analysis of advanced concepts and technologies for nonproliferation and nuclear security.

  • Perform entry-level work within a technical science and engineering environment working in conjunction with Sandia staff on interdisciplinary projects that involve applying integrated technical judgment—which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses about the uses and deployment of advanced technologies in support of US nonproliferation and nuclear security goals.

  • Support socio-technical system analysis, including investigating different options for defining and optimizing emergent properties and (un)expected behaviors—including the potential use of statistical, stochastic, deterministic, formal and quasi-formal methods.

  • Perform exploratory data analysis of complex data sources. Report on the performance of an algorithm for supervised machine learning applications. Capable of performing entry-level data labeling tasks.

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  • U.S. citizenship

    Desired:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0

  • Graduate student in mathematics, science, engineering, or social sciences

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teams and as an individual

  • Ability to perform research on socio-technical system and global security policy to synthesize and analyze disparate source materials, and to present research results

  • Extensive knowledge of a suite of software, including Microsoft Office.

  • Familiar with analysis techniques for understanding complex system behaviors

  • Experience in international affairs and/or security studies, preferably with a specific focus on nonproliferation issues

  • Knowledge of project management

  • Capability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks

  • Ability to travel in support of programs

  • Demonstrated versatility, political savvy, and high tolerance for ambiguity

    Department Description:

The mission of the International Safeguards and Engagements Department (6832) is to provide technical solutions to the international safeguards regime and support the development of safeguards and export control competencies in partner countries. Through our US government sponsors we research technologies, build capabilities, and provide analyses to support the international nuclear nonproliferation monitoring regime¿s mission of ensuring that nuclear activities are used for peaceful purposes. Our work supports the export control regime through commodity identification training. We engage with international partners through the Visiting Research Scholar Program and the Cooperative Monitoring Center.
