What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are currently hiring Year-Round Graduate Student Interns. The AutonomyNM intern program aims to give dedicated students opportunities to develop the technical, professional and leadership skills necessary to positively impact the nation through research and development of autonomous systems from stationary to hypersonic applications, from a single drone to swarms.

We are interested in students with a passion for research areas that include autonomous systems, machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, complex algorithm development, neural networks, computer vision/image processing, sensing and perception, localization, sensor fusion, high-fidelity dynamic simulation, and aerospace navigation/guidance/control software and hardware development. Our program is interdisciplinary and designed for students pursuing degrees in the following majors:

  • Computer science

  • Computer engineering

  • Electrical engineering

  • Robotics or Artificial Intelligence

  • Applied Mathematics

  • Statistics or Data science

  • Aerospace engineering

  • Mechanical engineering

    On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Perform detailed R&D tasks such as coding, CAD, or electro-mechanical lab work, as directed by a project PI or mentor.

  • Network to explore avenues to contribute your results or knowledge to a Sandia effort.

  • Explore ways to utilize knowledge from Sandia to advance national security.

  • Document your work for integration into a bigger Sandia effort or publication.

    AutonomyNM exists to innovate and implement autonomy solutions for our national security mission. We do this by recruiting the best and brightest from world-class institutions, mentoring the next generation of engineers and scientists, investing in our staff to develop new capabilities, and demonstrating cutting-edge research in the lab and beyond. Qualified candidates will be part of a larger intern hub, Technical Internships to Advance National Security (TITANS) that includes tracks for Cybersecurity, Software and Math and Analytics.

Posting Duration:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

• Proficiency in at least one of: Python, C++, Matlab, CUDA, Julia, or another coding language• Experience with implementing autonomous systems and/or machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision• Familiarity with control theory, optimization, graph theory• Familiarity with algorithm analysis and design, particularly in the context of distributed or multi-agent systems• Familiarity with reinforcement learning• Ability to implement and test algorithms in simulation• Familiarity with aerodynamics, flight mechanics, or flight vehicle modeling and simulation• Ability to work in a team environment, with solid oral and written communication skills

About Our Team:

Autonomy NM conducts research and engineering in support of three primary application areas: 1) Onboard autonomy for sensing and target recognition, advanced decisioning, and novel navigation/guidance/control (NGC) systems; 2) Cooperative autonomous systems for high consequence mission execution; and 3) AI-enabled modeling and analysis of national security technologies.

The Autonomy for Hypersonics Mission Campaign Department “5449” is responsible for university collaborations, an innovative research portfolio in autonomous systems development, and flight demonstrations of technology advancement. The department supports the research and development of software, autonomy algorithms, prototype hardware, target recognition, and navigation/guidance/control. We actively partner with subject matter experts both at Sandia and throughout the nation to execute high-impact research to meet national defense needs. Summer Interns at AutonomyNM will have the opportunity to perform experiments in a state-of-the-art 4000-sqft high bay drone lab with a high-resolution motion capture system.

Security Clearance:
