Sandia National Laboratories Intern - Advanced Decision Analytics R&D Graduate Summer in Albuquerque, New Mexico

The Advanced Decision Analytics department is interested in students with a passion for research areas that include operations research, mathematics and statistics, military systems, data science, machine learning, complex algorithm derivation, and software development. Our program is interdisciplinary and designed for students pursuing degrees in the following majors, in alphabetical order:

  • Computer science

  • Data science

  • Mathematics

  • Operations Research

  • Statistics

  • Systems Engineering

    Other STEM backgrounds will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

    On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Learn a new problem domain

  • Develop an understanding of a new simulation or optimization tool or technique

  • Collect and organize data

  • Generate, analyze, assess, and present results

  • Perform R&D in the design, development, and application of simulation, optimization, and advanced decision analysis tools

  • Apply novel concepts in data science and machine learning to decision analytics

  • Partner and collaborate with technical staff members to deliver optimization solutions to military programs

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

The qualified candidate should have experience and a strong interest in one or multiple of the following areas:

  • Experience with modern statistical analysis tools and methods

  • Experience with optimization algorithm development and solving problems in applied mathematics

  • Experience with software development processes and familiarity with modern software development methodologies

  • Experience with MatLab, C++, Python, or another coding language

  • Experience with Linux operating systems

  • Experience with machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning

  • Experience performing reliability and failure analysis

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical systems integration

  • An ambitious self-starter with a can-do nature

  • An interest in year-round internship opportunities

  • An interest in pursuing a PhD degree

About Our Team:

The Advanced Decision Analytics department exists to inform and influence next generation military technology design optimization and development for our national security mission. We do this by elucidating complex military systems objectives/requirements, exploring the art-of-the-possible technology trade space, and developing designs that could be matured through rapid prototyping and testing. The department utilizes state-of-the-art operations research tools, systems engineering, and interdisciplinary teams to achieve this mission from concept through design development to operations and sustainment, and into modernization.

Security Clearance:
