Sandia National Laboratories Intelligence and Counterintelligence Officer (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

We are seeking an Intelligence and Counterintelligence Officer who is passionate and dedicated to detecting, defending, and disrupting the actions of bad actors who are working for the benefit of foreign intelligence services that are attempting to penetrating one of the premier national laboratories in the United States. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work with our analytical and cyber cadre to initiate and conduct investigations and inquiries to determine if a foreign adversary or a malicious insider is attempting to gain access to sensitive technologies or members of the workforce who are working on sensitive programs.

  • Provide briefings to educate the workforce about methodologies used by foreign intelligence services to corrupt an unwitting or vulnerable employee or otherwise gain access to sensitive programs.

  • Provide travel briefings and debriefings to persons traveling to foreign countries.

  • Provide host briefings and debriefing to members of the workforce who will be in contact with foreign nationals.

  • Share domain expertise on specific geographical areas of the world, understanding what SNL equities are sought out by intelligence services in a specific geographic area to protect all SNL resources (people, information, and property).

  • Develop and foster a close working relationship with DOE headquarters entities, law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and other organizations throughout the laboratory to advance the mission of the Office of Counterintelligence.


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related discipline, plus (10) years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience with a United States federal government agency or contractor of, such as the DOE, FBI, CIA, or DOD.

  • Ten years of work experience in a sensitive, classified environment.

  • Investigative know-how within the counterintelligence field with specific experience in the collection, analysis, evaluation, and dissemination of Counterintelligence information.

  • Experience in working with a task force or multi-agency program comprised of local, state and/or federal organizations.

  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance or DOD/OGA (other government agency) equivalent with the ability to obtain and hold a SCI clearance as well as the ability to maintain the clearance level required to start.


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, having the ability to explain and document complex ideas clearly and concisely.

  • Knowledge of investigative skills, to include case documentation, preservation of evidence, interviewing techniques, and liaison experience with other government and non-government agencies.

  • Experience in extracting and accurately summarizing relevant information from coworkers, managers, witnesses, and subjects.

  • Experience with cyber threats and cyber investigations.

  • Familiarity with advanced persistent threat modus operandi and indicators.

  • Computer skills and familiarity with word processing, secure databases, presentations, and email applications.

  • Counterterrorism investigative experience.

    Department Description:

The Department of Energy (DOE) Office Office of Counterintelligence (OCI), Sandia Field Office, is responsible for managing all counterintelligence-related activities at the laboratories, both in New Mexico and California, on behalf of the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the DOE’s Office of Intelligence (IN) and Counterintelligence.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
