What Your Job Will Be Like:

Sandia is seeking a HPC Performance Researcher and Analyst to advance performance evaluation for our current and prototype computing systems. This position is an outstanding opportunity to explore how applications perform in conjunction with systems and to influence next-generation HPC acquisitions.

In this role, you will work across three groups that collaborate to provide the research basis for new architectural designs through to the production realization of those systems in support of our scientific and machine learning applications. You will develop tools and analytics to provide continuous run time insight into the efficiency and performance of systems, applications, and facilities. You will develop and evaluate benchmarks and proxies for applications, and workflows to assess and predict performance on exploratory architectures. You will work with system administrators and users to discover and resolve issues in hardware, configuration and usage that affect performance.

Every day in our team is different, but typical activities will include:

  • Work across research, development, and production teams to diagnose performance issues and to advise next-generation design decisions

  • Develop tools and methodologies to evaluate large-scale application and system telemetry data at scale

  • Develop, build, and run benchmarking, proxy, and application testing suites on current and prototype HPC hardware and assess architectural efficiency

  • Participate in technical working groups evaluating, reviewing, and recommending architectures for the DOE national laboratories

This position is eligible for telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or relevant STEM field plus two (2) years of proven experience

  • Two (2) or more years’ experience diagnosing and resolving performance issues in HPC applications (e.g., MPI-based) on large-scale systems (e.g., 100’s – 10,000’s nodes)

  • Two (2) or more years’ experience running applications on HPC systems

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q Level clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with HPC monitoring, tuning, and analysis tools (e.g., LDMS, VTune, Caliper, Darshan, Jupyter Notebooks) and/or benchmarking

  • Experience building and tuning to address advanced architectural features such as GPUs, Burst Buffers, proprietary High Speed Networks, High performance filesystems, etc.

  • Experience working with advanced developers to understand application internals to diagnose performance issues and to recommend improved use of HPC system resources

  • Experience with performance portability layers (e.g., Kokkos) and architecture-specific programming libraries

  • Experience developing scientific applications in C/C++ and experience with MPI
