What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation's security? If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection Program is seeking a mid-career and experienced Health Physicist/Radiological Engineer to provide technical support and leadership for SNL's diverse radiological operations and the corporate Radiation Protection Program.

On any given day, you may be asked to:

  • Perform radiological hazard evaluations,

  • Design and implement radiological protection safety programs,

  • Assist Radiation Protection customer support teams and individual line organizations to implement operational aspects of corporate Radiation Protection requirements,

  • Recommend appropriate controls and develop and implement radiological monitoring protocols,

  • Assess program effectiveness and line implementation,

  • Assist with incident response, review, analysis, and reporting,

  • Develop corrective action plans and lessons learned,

  • Provide oversight of radiological control technicians (RCTs), and

  • Respond to and direct others in incident and emergency response situations.

Work is fast-paced and assignments may change frequently in response to customer and Radiation Protection organization needs. Some travel may be required. Activities include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master's or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, health physics or nuclear engineering preferred.

  • Minimum of (5) years staff-level diverse operational health physics experience for Bachelor’s or non-Health Physics/Nuclear Engineering Master’s candidates, minimum of (2) years staff-level diverse operational health physics experience for Master’s Health Physics/Nuclear Engineering candidates.

  • Working knowledge of 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20.

  • Current computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Ability to occasionally work a modified schedule to meet customer needs and travel.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations.

  • Ability to work effectively independently, and in teamed/matrixed situations in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and move from program to operational support work and back, and between varying types of radiological operations (e.g., nuclear facility, waste management, accelerators, bench-scale R&D, etc.) quickly and effectively.

  • Excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to effectively work with and sometimes direct other health physicists and RCTs.

  • Ability to independently develop solutions to specific problems related to issues of moderate scope, complexity, and impact. Ability to occasionally lead teams for such projects.

  • Ability to analyze and makes recommendations to management on changes to policies, processes, or methods.

  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced research and development environment.

  • Experience working in an operational DOE health physics program

  • Experience continuously improving a radiological protection program, including implementation of new radiological controls best practices.

  • Experience working in an operational environment such as DOE or NRC facilities or Naval Reactors.

  • Active DOE “L” or” Q” level security clearance.

About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the Corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
