NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Salary Range:
$101,400 - $201,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a R&D S&E, Geosciences Engineering (Experienced) Staff Member who can expect to focus on subsurface storage for energy security.
On any given day you may be called on to:
The successful candidate can expect interesting assignments within Sandia’s role as advisors to the Department of Energy on subsurface, geologic storage of energy. This includes the areas of subsurface storage in salt formations and other pertinent geologic formations. Our work focuses on national security needs such as the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as well as the nation's efforts to scientifically address climate change through decarbonization of the energy sector via hydrogen storage, among other applications. Expect to find satisfying work under a variety of additional projects including laboratory research projects, small business administration projects, and others pertinent to national security and climate change. Qualifications We Require:
Master’s degree in geoscience or applicable engineering field plus 1 year experience OR equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
Evidence of work experience, projects or education in technical geologic applications
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Evidence conducting advanced research in geotechnical applications
Qualifications We Desire:
PhD degree in geoscience or applicable engineering field with requisite publishing and presentation capabilities
Quantitative geologist with expertise in developing conceptual and structural models for a variety of subsurface geological settings
Ability to communicate and work closely with non-geologists to translate goals of interdisciplinary projects
Demonstrated work within governmental management structures
Experience managing large, complex projects
Expertise in geographic information systems
Assist in integrating geological concepts into numerical and conceptual models of surface and subsurface engineered systems
Education experience applicable to geologic-based energy and storage systems
Experience mentoring students, staff and peers on institutional technical standards and norms
About Our Team:
Sandia National Laboratories’ Geotechnology and Engineering department brings quantitative earth science expertise for scientific climate change efforts, national security projects and industry/university partnerships. The department is actively engaging government, fellow national laboratories, and industry to investigate subsurface storage of energy in suitable geologic formations for efforts to decarbonize the energy sector, advance hydrogen storage / utilization scenarios and contribute to the realization of our nation’s energy strategy. Our department hosts the scientific and technical advisors to the Department of Energy’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Our core competencies include geologic assessment; structural analysis of underground salt storage caverns; well casing analysis and risk assessment; cavern salt leaching mitigation strategies; cavern integrity monitoring via detailed and innovative geomechanical modeling; surface subsidence studies; microseismic analysis & monitoring; vapor pressure emissions control; oil chemistry analysis and implications; and other activities necessary to safely and effectively operate subsurface storage systems. The department also spearheads matrixed capability teams for investigation of subsurface systems including geochemistry, geomechanics, microbiology, risk assessment, fluid dynamics and system-level analysis of energy systems.
