Sandia National Laboratories Fire Protection Engineer (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who is passionate about and dedicated to building a safe work culture. You will perform work as a Fire Protection Engineer to innovate and deliver fire protection solutions, enabling Sandia to accomplish its missions, while protecting workers, the public, the environment, and key national assets.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Craft outstanding and dynamic solutions to prevent and mitigate fire and life-safety hazards in a highly regulated environments.
  • Work with line management to ensure mission work aligns with safety objectives and the intent of fire and life-safety code requirements.
  • Perform fire investigations to resolve origins and causes, and perform engineering analyses to determine if any breakdown in the fire protection plans and procedures may have occurred.
  • Support the authority who have jurisdiction for all fire protection matters at Sandia.
  • Develop and implement fire prevention programs and procedures, and perform inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements for fire protection systems.


  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering/Technology or relevant discipline (such as Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, etc.) plus five (5) years of relevant experience; or other relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a license as a Fire Protection Engineer; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-level security clearance.


  • Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Technology.
  • Understanding of applicable federal laws, regulations, building/fire codes, executive orders, and DOE Orders related to fire protection and highly protected risk concepts.
  • Understanding of intent and the independent and interdependent relationship between applicable building codes, fire codes, and national consensus codes and standards.
  • Experience using and interpreting the IBC and its referenced codes/standards (e.g.,NFPA) applicable to a diverse set of operations that include hazardous, industrial, business, assembly, and storage occupancies.
  • Knowledge of the NFPA requirements associated with inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
