What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Explosive Material Machinist Tradesperson

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Utilize all types of machine tools, bench and floor equipment, computers and monitoring devices, remote control equipment, and computerized numerical control (CNC) machine tools including the use of a laser welder to design and to fabricate products from a wide range of materials including explosives.

  • Responsibilities include manufacturing products from solid models using CAD/CAM software and other computer tools to acquire, exchange and manage data; planning, scheduling, and fabricating necessary jigs, fixtures, molds, templates, gauges, cutting and forming tools; collaborating with engineers and serving as a consultant on design and manufacturability issues; developing cost estimates and writing work instructions/procedures.

  • Perform work using industry-standard safety practices.

  • Provide technical oversight for shop, sub-shop, and out-of-shop fabricate-to-print work.

  • As assigned, act as lead person which includes, but is not limited to, responsibility for making schedule commitment(s).

  • Utilize a computerized database to maintain required records.

  • Learning and implementation of the work planning and control processes to plan and carry out activity level work

  • Obtaining knowledge regarding explosive materials and their properties to aid in machining of unique parts and materials made of or containing explosives.

  • Willingness to drive and work at a remote location (bldg.9960).

  • As a condition of employment, Metal Trades positions are represented by the Metal Trades Council (MTC) and represented employees must pay the monthly membership dues or agency fee.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Minimum 5 years as a fully qualified Machinist Tradesperson and completion of a State approved machinist apprenticeship program.

  • The demonstrated ability to plan, lay out, fabricate, and modify a wide range of machined products or components in an engineering, research and development environment.

  • Willingness to perform hands on work with explosives materials.

  • Experience with Mastercam CAD/CAM software.

  • Ability to perform work using industry-standard and SNL safety practices.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q level security clearance.

  • Ability to thoroughly document all processes/procedures and complete required Work Authorization documents.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Knowledge in machining; pressing powders; tool and die design; disassembly; assembly; storage; handling and transportation of explosives.

  • Knowledge of explosive materials and their properties

  • Detailed understanding of Haas CNC systems.

  • ES&H documentation to support operations of this machine shop.

  • Experience programming and using ProE and Solidworks.

  • Ability to contribute to development and implement ES&H.

  • Ability to collaborating with engineers and serving as a consultant on design and manufacturability issues.

  • Typical experience shall include a minimum of 8 years as a fully qualified Machinist Tradesperson with both manual and CNC work represented in past work.

  • Provide technical and project oversight for one-man shop.

Security Clearance:
