NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

Salary Range:

$99,700 - $196,100 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate¿s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

Radiation Protection (RP) is seeking an Engineering Program/Project Lead for Radiation Protection Operations, 00616, for Line Support Team (LST) 4 supporting the functional Mission spaces of Accelerators.

Candidates selected for this Engineering Program/Project Lead role will be called upon to provide direct leadership and supervision to the Radiological Control Technicians and Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers at all levels within their LST, and shall be the RP Subject Matter Expert (SME) and dedicated Point of Contact (PoC) in support of the Line Customers that are part of their dedicated functional Mission spaces for implementation and application of all RP services.

On any given day, you may be:

• Direct and supervise the activities of Radiological Control Technicians and Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers to ensure the proper implementation and application of all RP services

• Provide expert-level advisement to Line Customers on the control of radiological hazards in all experimental and production environments encountered in the functional space

• Provide expert-level advisement to Line Customers in the appropriate application of DOE regulations and orders as well as SNL policy

• Provide expert-level advisement to RP Management on resource allocations for the functional space

• Provide expert-level review of all Customer-owned Safety Basis and Radiological Technical Work Documents (RTWDs, formerly known as Integrated TWDs or OPs) in the functional space and provide necessary SME concurrence

• Lead RP participation as an RP SME for the functional space on Safety Committees at the Corporate and Line Customer level

• Lead RP participation as an RP SME for the functional space on defined Work Planning Committees for their Line Customers

• Perform expert-level technical analysis on shielding, containment, respiratory protection, nuclear reactions, radiological monitoring and ALARA

• Lead RP technical projects and Programmatic Working Groups (WGs).

• Authorize technical documents for the implementation of the RP program within the functional space in support of Line Customer projects, as well as for the greater RP Program as needed

• Lead and/or participating in and supporting internal RP audits and assessments as needed, as well as external audits and assessments as identified as an RP SME

• Train RP personnel and Line Customers alike in the implementation and application of all RP services

• Provide overall subject matter expertise in radiation protection for emergency management, recommending and directing deployments of RP personnel and resources during exercises and real emergencies.

Qualifications We Require:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, health physics or nuclear engineering preferred, plus a minimum of (8) years staff-level diverse operational health physics experience

• Master’s candidates, minimum of (5) years staff-level diverse operational health physics experience

• Working knowledge of 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20

• Current computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

• Ability to occasionally work a modified schedule to meet customer needs and travel

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearanc

• Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations

Qualifications We Desire:

• Experience providing dedicated operational health physics project management and guidance to Line Customers within the functional Mission space identified

• Proven track-record of excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to effectively work with and direct other health physicists and RCTs

• Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail

• Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and flexibility

• Ability to work effectively independently, and in team situations in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments

• Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, moving from program to operational work seamlessly between varying types of radiological concerns (e.g., nuclear facilities, waste management, accelerators, bench-scale R&D, etc.) quickly and effectively

• Proven track-record of independently developing solutions to issues of moderate to high complexity and impact and providing expert analysis of situations to make recommendations to management on changes to policies, processes, or methods

• Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification

• Experience working in a fast-paced research and development environment

• Experience working in an operational DOE health physics program

• Experience continuously improving a radiological protection program, including implementation of new radiological controls best practices

• Experience working in an operational environment such as DOE or NRC facilities or Naval Reactors

• Active DOE “L” or” Q” level security clearance

The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls.
