What Your Job Will Be Like:
The EM and Lightning Qualification Facilities department has an outstanding opportunity to lead the Sandia Lightning Simulator team and the large-scale pulsed power testing facilities in the Electromagnetics Systems Engineering and Qualification group. This dedicated position will lead a technical support team to design and implement qualification and R&D experiments, maintain and repair the facility, and manage the daily facility operations.
The opportunity includes leading a Sandia Lightning Simulator facility modernization program in the initial design phase to upgrade the facility from manual operation (80’s technology) to improved reliability and repeatability with microprocessor control and automation.
The Sandia Lightning Simulator is a pulsed power facility capable of providing a direct injection 200 kA severe lightning discharge (stroke) to evaluate the response of a variety of test articles. This facility is also unique it its ability to provide double-pulse lightning strokes (with a second Marx tank) and a continuing current in between strokes. This capability provides critical nuclear safety evidence for qualification of high consequence test articles.
The Electromagnetic Environment Simulator (EMES) is a Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) cell that can provide Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) environments of greater than 250 kV/m. This EMES facility provides EMP response evidence for qualification of high consequence test articles.
The Nearby Lightning Environment Simulator (NBL) is a magnetic field loop that provides a magnetic field environment simulating that of a severe lightning strike 10 m away (3280 A/m). The NBL facility provides nearby lightning response evidence for high consequence test articles.
Key functions of this motivated role include, but are not limited to:
Support the test planning and design, execution, analysis, and documentation of electromagnetic experiments.
Planning and coordinating daily pre-and post-test activities.
Teaming with test facility and project technologists to ensure the logistical needs of the project are satisfied.
Collaborating with customers to include aiding in the design and fabrication of simulator hardware, acquiring custom test and measurement setups, and arranging for external services such as Industrial Hygiene, Facilities, or Photometric support.
Developing and implementing Engineered Safety, Work Planning and Controls, and following ES&H requirements.
