What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Navigation, Guidance, and Control (NGC) department is currently seeking a Hypersonic Real-Time Simulator Engineer who will develop the next generation of real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) mission simulators. Working with avionics and software teams, the successful candidate will design, build, and test rack mount versions of hypersonic flight systems then integrate them with a high-fidelity real-time mission simulation to make the system believe it is flying a real mission!

The successful candidate will focus on HWIL architecture and integration of new technologies and avionics, while considering what fault injection capability to design in. NGC staff work as part of an integrated multi-disciplinary team to understand how each system's avionics hardware and software work together, and how it can fail, to ultimately establish total confidence in flight software performance and robustness for hypersonic boost-glide systems prior to flight tests.

The research & development culture encourages the team to contribute to all areas of design, development, and test and truly own their meaningful contributions to these flight programs. This person will also collaborate with sister NGC organizations who focus on low-to-mid Technology Readiness Level (TRL) technologies. These organizations are managed as a team and the unified goal is to mature NGC technologies from concepts to an integrated flight system solution.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Design, prototype, & build electromechanical layouts of modular HWIL drawers for integration of new avionics components

  • Integrate vehicle avionics and verify their functionality in the HWIL environment

  • Develop device drivers to enable communication of avionics devices with the real-time simulation product

  • Prototype and demonstrate HWIL test configurations for rapid response investigations

  • Assist with simulation framework development, automation, and analysis

  • Contribute to HWIL simulation architecture design and development in the hardware, simulation, and/or software domains

  • Work closely with avionics, software, and systems engineering team members to understand the intended flight system design

  • Support system-level hardware testing including participation on-console with Assembly, Integration, and Test teams

  • Coordinate and collaborate with external program partners to meet program-level objectives and achievements

Periodic travel may be required to support system-level integration testing and flight test activities. Trip durations can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on assigned roles and responsibilities. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering or a relevant field

  • Experience using MATLAB, Simulink, C/C++, and/or Java

  • Experience with two or more of the following:

  • Circuit design and evaluation

  • Hardware integration and troubleshooting

  • Using digital debugging tools (e.g. oscilloscopes, logic probes, and logic analyzers)

  • Common communication protocols (e.g. serial, Ethernet, and CAN)

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in one of the above fields

  • Experience in the following areas:

  • Real-time systems

  • Linux

  • Embedded software development

  • Object oriented programming

  • Common flight system avionics including flight computers, IMUs, & GPS receivers

  • FPGAs

  • NGC algorithms

  • Version control tools such as GIT

  • COMSEC

  • Possess a strong dedication to positive teaming dynamic, strong written and verbal skills, detail oriented

  • An active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret

About Our Team:

The Navigation, Guidance, & Control (NGC) Department (05442) develops and delivers integrated, system-level NGC solutions for the hypersonic strike domain space, enabled by embedded software development and test for real-time applications. Our multi-disciplinary team establishes confidence in our software products through high fidelity six degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) dynamic modeling & simulation (MODSIM), Continuous Integration & Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), Software-in-the-Loop (SWIL) testing, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) testing, and integrated system testing. We work closely with sister departments to mature emerging NGC technologies and verify weapon system integration compatibility. Sponsored by the Department of Defense, we team with industry throughout the development cycle which ultimately culminates in high consequence flight test demonstrations. We take pride in our reputation for delivering robust, high-performance hypersonic flight control solutions for our sponsors and a responsibility for transitioning this next-generation technology to industry to enable an operational hypersonic strike capability for the warfighter.
