What Your Job Will Be Like:

The SLBM warhead systems teams (W76-1, W88 Alt 370 and W93) at Sandia are working with the NNSA, U.S. Navy, Los Alamos National Laboratory and DoD contractors to assess compatibility of these warheads with the next generation of the Trident missile, D5LE2. This is a highly integrated joint effort that is in the early stages of development for flight test vehicles, ground test equipment and mod/sim to support the missile development ground and flight test program.

This role will be organizationally assigned to the W88 Stockpile Systems Team (2224) and will support the W76-1, W88 Alt 370 and W93 D5LE2 compatibility requirements needs approximately 75% and the W88 Alt 370 Stockpile System requirements management needs approximately 25%. Working on this program, you’ll be part of an outstanding team that takes its national security mission to heart, helping to make decisions that lay the foundation for three high-visibility, high-impact nuclear weapon programs. You’ll work in state-of-the-art facilities with talented people across the Nuclear Security Enterprise and DoD, addressing interesting challenges at every stage of design and development, and making lasting relationships that will continue throughout your career.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Derive system requirements for W76-1, W88 Alt 370 and W93 compatibility with the D5LE2 missile.

  • Manage system requirements for the W88 Alt 370 Stockpile System.

  • Derive and interpret shared requirements with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Lockheed Martin Space (LMS).

  • Collaborate regularly with the program’s leadership and Sandia’s executive management on metrics and burn down plans.

  • Prepare for and present to diverse audiences at technical design reviews and programmatic meetings.

  • Coordinate with teams to develop a detailed understanding of customer requirements and ensure maturation of requirements for specific system aspects.

  • Attend technical meetings with the Integration Management Team (IMT), Flight Test Integration Team (FTIT) and Telemetry Mechanical Integration Team (TMIT).

  • Work together with other system requirement engineers and/or component engineers, and provide technical mentorship on how to write appropriate requirements for verification.

  • Manage the requirements database objects for requirements traceability, orphan requirements and inconsistencies within requirements language.

  • Assist in integration activities with various mod/sim and hardware development teams.

  • Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams (i.e., NNSA, DoD, LANL).

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position (up to 25%).

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related STEM field, plus (1) one year of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus (5) five years of experience; OR equivalent related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

  • Demonstrated proficiency using IBM Rational Distributed Object-Oriented Requirements System (DOORS) or equivalent tool for requirements management.

  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent (DoD Top Secret clearance).

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in above-stated field.

  • Experience working on nuclear weapons design, qualification, production, or related projects.

  • Experience developing, negotiating, and communicating requirements for either Joint Test Assemblies or other nuclear weapon system-level designs.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working on a PRT or within NW product realization or sustainment framework.

  • Project management skills.

  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and implementation.

  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment, and to work effectively with different levels of management, DoE/DoD partners, and Systems Leads.

About Our Team:

Systems engineering responsibilities for the US Navy W88/Mk5 SLBM-based nuclear weapon system, to help assure it remains safe, reliable and of the highest performance as the underlying basis of the US nuclear deterrent capability. We provide engineering support for the life cycle of the weapon, including maintenance, logistics, refurbishment, surveillance, special studies, testing, analysis and assessment. Our team is also leading the cross-system aspects of the D5LE2 compatibility assessment program for the W76-1, W88 Alt 370 and W93 systems.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
