What Your Job Will Be Like:
Are you a motivated undergraduate student in STEM interested in working side-by-side with world experts within Sandia’s Climate Security Center? If so, join our Atmospheric Sciences Intern program! Our interns tackle challenges related to atmospheric and climate science, instrument development, field and laboratory measurements and many related fields at the DOE’s leading engineering R&D laboratory.
Our student interns are offered hands-on, flexible, and ground breaking research opportunities while being mentored by Sandia National Laboratories scientists and engineers. Sandia emphasizes students’ growth in communication and teamwork through their work in cross-disciplinary teams in support of Sandia’s overarching mission of delivering “Exceptional Service in the National Interest.”
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Work with atmospheric scientists and engineers to analyze data
Generate or run data processing scripts
Assist in generating graphics and reports associated with atmospheric data
Assist with testing atmospheric science instrumentation and validating datasets
Update asset tracking software or participate in other operational tasks related to scientific field campaigns

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Qualifications We Require:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited undergraduate program
Must be pursuing a degree in Earth/Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
Basic programming experience and familiarity with data processing and analysis
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
U.S. citizenship

About Our Team:
The staff in the Atmospheric Sciences Department (8933) at Sandia National Laboratories have expertise in atmospheric measurements, instrumentation and balloon systems. The department supports the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program and is tasked with developing and supporting tethered balloon systems that are available to a wide variety of federal and academic users. The tethered balloon system consists of an advanced winch system that tethers a 22’ diameter balloon. The systems support many flight missions including national security, wind energy, marine energy, aerosol measurement, atmospheric research, biological sampling and radar calibration. Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
