NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Salary Range:

$88,600 - $172,300

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

Organization 05444, NGC&S Advanced Development, is currently seeking an R&D Aeronautical Engineer with navigation, guidance, and control, sensing, and modeling and simulation interests and related experience.

This position seeks aerospace engineering expertise for the development, implementation, and testing of flight control systems for hypersonic flight vehicle applications.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Work as part of integrated multi-disciplinary teams, providing technology solutions and support to aerospace related military systems of the future

  • Function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate a positive demeanor towards collaboration

This position requires moderate travel in support of customer interactions and flight testing of vehicle prototype flight control system applications.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with an Aerospace Emphasis; or an Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in above

  • Experience using high level programming languages, such as C, C++, and Java

  • Documented coursework completion in the field of Aerospace flight mechanics and aero-control design

  • Documented coursework in Aerodynamics

  • The ability to occasionally travel

  • The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • An academic background in guidance algorithmic approaches, such as Proportional Navigation

  • Experience with simulation tools (e.g. Mathworks Matlab, Simulink, and Simulink Real-Time)

  • A working knowledge of structural dynamics

  • Experience with navigation systems, including both GPS and inertial

  • A strong background in Spacecraft Dynamical systems theory and related Mod/Sim applications experience

  • Modeling and simulation of complex dynamical systems, such as thrust vector control servomechanisms

  • Experience with electrical avionic components and related system implementations

  • Experience with digital computer methods for numerical solutions of partial differential equations

  • Documented coursework completion in the study of aerodynamics

  • General knowledge and experience with the application of Systems Engineering concepts

  • Writing skills demonstrated through professional publications

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Proficient with using Mathworks Matlab script

  • Knowledge of Kalman filter (estimation) theory and signal processing techniques

  • Hands-on experience using Simulink to implement 6DOF simulations for flight vehicle applications

  • Mechanical design skills related to aerospace systems structures and avionic components

  • A general background in Model-based Systems Engineering

  • Experience with deploying simulations on parallel or cluster computer configurations

  • Applications experience with industry standard Government Off the Shelf (GOTS) and commercial software commodities, such as GMAT, SIMDIS, and GIANT

  • Missile system integration test and evaluation experience

  • Familiarity with Model-based Systems Engineering concepts

  • Familiarity with real time embedded software development

  • An active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret

About Our Team:

The Navigation Guidance and Control and Sensing (NGC&S) Department, 05444, provides technology solutions and support to development projects within the Integrated Military Systems Program at Sandia. Hardware and software technologies are developed, integrated, and tested to provide flight control solutions for missiles and hypersonic reentry platform applications. Typically, these systems support the Missile Defense Agency, Army, Navy, and other Department of Defense Agencies. We are focused on maturing next-generation technologies and our applications cover a broad spectrum of applications including GPS and inertial navigation, alternative-navigation sensors, communication and flight termination systems, advanced aerodynamically controlled vehicles, maneuvering hypersonic vehicles, and ballistic missile systems. Related applications require the extensive use of real time embedded computers and custom real-time software for the realization of fully integrated flight control system solutions. The NGC group is significantly involved in modeling and simulation activities in support of these same application areas. The department strives to provide leadership to the Laboratory and the Nation in the creative development, use, and application of both NGC and mod/sim technologies.
